Gender equality is the cornerstone of Swedish society, based on the principle of equal rights and opportunities for all, regardless of their background. Cities and buildings are for everyone, they have to be designed to accommodate many different needs. This is a democratic right. Equality in urban planning is about more than just feeling welcome. It’s a matter of health, wellbeing, security, and opportunities to access activities and recreation. Collectively, we still have a long way to go. Festival of Place catalyses action for all those working to change the built environment for the better. Building gender equality in our cities is something that we need to do together – and we must do it now. We are proud to contribute to this important debate that investigates and celebrates the potential of Gender Equal Cities.
